The first project to be completed in Haiti was building a 12 room school in Ouanaminthe.
The school was begun in the spring of 2003 and completed by September that year.
Well and Pumphouse:
A well was dug on the school property in 2006.
The pumphouse was built and completed in the summer of 2008.
Warehouse/Kitchen/Cafeteria
Our current project is to complete the warehouse/kitchen/cafeteria. As you can see we presently have the walls up but need to put a roof on the building and secure the warehouse section with steel doors. Our goal is to serve a nutritious meal to the school children every day.
Update on the warehouse: The warehouse was completed in October 2009. The United Nations was able to begin delivering rice and beans that could be securely stored in the warehouse. The children were receiving a nutritious meal each school day but with the January earthquake the United Nations food distribution has been suspended. (photos coming soon!)
Our next goal is to begin providing food for the children again and completing the kitchen and cafeteria area.
Restrooms/Shower Facilities
This is what the school children currently use for the restroom. Our plan is to level this building and fill in the hole. We have plans to put in a septic system, build a bathroom and shower facilities for the children to use. Most Haitians now bathe in streams and rivers that provide little or no privacy.
Due to the recent earthquake in Haiti our future projects are delayed so we can focus on meeting the immediate needs of the school children and Port-Au-Prince refugees. UNICEF food aide for the children has been suspended until April or May at the earliest, as a result we need to direct our resources to more immediate needs.
